Abstract painter Carla Accardi is one of the first Italian female artists to be recognized on the world stage. His art is dissociated from the usual canons of the time, which in the Italian panorama were purely masculine, indeed his is a painting studded with linguistic comparisons, which is expressed with courage and experimentation, reaching very high peaks. Through a new sign creation, Accardi invents writing, a language indecipherable but which, at the same time, is testimony to its situation of otherness. The artist wants to make a “clean slate” of signifiers. Accardi has contributed to the birth of the feminist movement in Italy, thanks to the initiatives of the women’s Rivolta group, which she founded in 1970 together with Carla Lonzi and Elvira Banotti. Although over the years, she moved away from feminism, it is good to remember that she was a protagonist of the Italian feminist movement and had a fundamental role in opening a series of questions, still relevant, on the relationship between art, female creativity, feminism and difference.

Pittrice astrattista, Carla Accardi è una delle prime artiste italiane donne ad avere riconoscimenti sulla scena mondiale. La sua arte si dissocia dai soliti canoni del tempo, che nel panorama italiano erano prettamente maschili, anzi la sua è una pittura costellata di confronti linguistici, che si esprime con coraggio e sperimentazione, raggiungendo vette altissime. Accardi attraverso la creazione di un nuovo segno inventa una scrittura, un linguaggio che risulta indecifrabile ma che al tempo stesso è testimonianza della sua situazione di alterità. L’artista vuole compiere una “tabula rasa” dei significanti. Accardi difatti contribuisce alla nascita del movimento femminista in Italia, grazie alle iniziative del gruppo Rivolta femminile, da lei costituito nel 1970 insieme a Carla Lonzi ed Elvira Banotti. Benché con gli anni si allontanò dal femminismo, è bene ricordare che è stata una protagonista del movimento femminista italiano ed ebbe un ruolo fondamentale per aver aperto una serie di questioni, ancora attuali, sulla relazione tra arte, creatività femminile, femminismo e differenza.
